What Do You Know, Joe?
In 1986, 49ers’ quarterback Joe Montana underwent low-back disc surgery. When he returned the next year, he decided to add chiropractic care to his health and fitness program.
I was treating several of the players at the time, but the future Hall-of-Famer was not yet a patient. With a referral from Roger Craig, I started working with Joe to keep him tuned up for the rest of that season and beyond—the adjustments even helped with his headaches!

Giant Steps.
In 2000, the Giants opened their new baseball stadium in downtown San Francisco. The Giants trainer, Marc Letendre, had a separate room built at the stadium where the players could receive chiropractic care.
It was awesome to show up at this new baseball park before a game and see all the excitement for the new venue and for this great sport. For me, it was exciting just to work with the players who needed care. I loved doing my part to keep them healthy and on the field.

The Cost of Results?
Many patients I see are initially worried about getting chiropractic care. They’re scared that the adjustment itself could go wrong and make things worse.
Interestingly enough, in 1992, my malpractice insurance was only $1,500 a year. Even now, 30 years later, it’s only $2,500 a year. Contrast that to the premiums for malpractice insurance paid by the traditional medical community—some as much as 5 to 20 times higher than mine. Higher premiums are generally associated with higher risk.

Even though it may not feel like it, cold plunges or showers—even splashing cold water on your face—stimulate the calming part of your nervous system, known as the parasympathetic nervous system. Cold water activates the vagus nerve and “shocks” your body into a parasympathetic response. Your heart rate slows, vasodilation increases blood flow to your brain, happy hormones are released, and your body relaxes.
